Can you download iOS 10 on iPhone 5?
By Buckie Wells
The iPhone 5 debuted almost four years ago but Apple just unveiled its newest operating system. So can you download iOS 10 on the iPhone 5?
Like many Septembers over the past several years, 2012 saw the release of a new iPhone, in this case, the iPhone 5. Apple discontinued it less than a year later after announcing the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. Additionally, this iPhone series was the last time we had small, flat-edged iPhones before the larger and curvier iPhone 6 debuted.
When the iPhone 5 debuted, it released alongside iOS 6. The iOS 6 operating system improved on things like Siri, Maps, and Podcasts. Also, it was the first software update to allow FaceTime over cellular service instead of WiFi.
Nevertheless, iOS 10 debuts as a much heftier software update than its predecessors. Yes, it is available for download on the iPhone 5 and promises to consume much less memory. Likewise, it will also help conserve battery life.
Therefore, any phones older than the iPhone 5 will not support iOS 10. If you own any of the following:
- 9th Generation: iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, SE
- 8th Generation: iPhone 6, 6 Plus
- 7th Generation: iPhone 5s, 5c
- 6th Generation: iPhone 5
Then, your device is eligible for an upgrade.
But if you own an iPhone 4 or older, then you’re out of luck and you might want to think about getting a new phone. Think about it: the iPhone 4’s screen is as small as a credit card, it doesn’t support 4G LTE speeds, and it doesn’t have Siri.
Furthermore, if you’re ready for a new phone, Apple optimized iOS 10 for its phones with larger screens and powerful processors. Its biggest features include Messaging updates and overhauling the way users interact with notifications.
Since iOS 10 releases alongside the iPhone 7, it’s impressive that Apple continues to support older devices despite churning out a new phone every year. Of course, there are plenty of consumers who have a hard time parting ways with their old devices.

In reality, Apple will release another new phone next year. This will most likely bump the iPhone 5 from the compatibility list. But, at least, you still have one more year to say goodbye to your precious iPhone 5.
