Colin Kaepernick’s jersey has become the best seller in the NFL, and now he’s going to put more money behind his cause.

Colin Kaepernick had drawn criticism, and some praise, from far and wide for his decision not to stand for the national anthem. His protest has spurred conversation, and he deserves credit for not avoiding media scrutiny.

Kaepernick’s jersey has become the No. 1 seller in the NFL in the time since evidence of his protest surfaced. Upon learning about that show of support from fans, Kaepernick took to Instagram to further show commitment to his cause.

Regardless of whether or not you agree with Kaepernick’s actions as of late, an act like this one in particular should certainly be commended. The 49ers quarterback is going out of his way here to show that this isn’t all about him, and an athlete deserves all the recognition in the world when they do something of that nature. Sometimes when you need to see your faith restored in professional athletes, something along the lines of this gesture takes place.

Kaepernick has already said he would donate his first $1 million in salary for this year to various organizations that support communities in need. On its own, his national anthem protest would look flimsy and labeled as a way to get attention, but Kaepernick is effectively putting money where his mouth is.

Kaepernick putting himself out there further to support communities in need is admirable, and a needed step. It will be interesting to see if other athletes, some of whom have already showed support for his national anthem protest to some degree, follow his lead and donate money to organizations and causes that mean something to them.
