In a recent interview, Roger Goodell gave his thoughts about Colin Kaepernick.

Roger Goodell can’t seem to keep his mouth shut. His mouth has gotten him in trouble before but he hasn’t learned yet. In a recent interview with the Associated Press, Goodell spoke about Colin Kaepernick and patriotism.

"“I support our players when they want to see change in society, and we don’t live in a perfect society… On the other hand, we believe very strongly in patriotism in the NFL… I think it’s important to have respect for our country, for our flag, for the people who make our country better; for law enforcement; and for our military who are out fighting for our freedoms and our ideals."

It’s a bit hypocritical to hear Goodell speaking about patriotism and respect for the military when the NFL makes millions of dollars to promote the military. Also, Goodell is ignoring the point that Kaepernick has every right to protest. Silencing athletes is not a good way to win over the NFL Player’s Association.

Goodell could have given a “no comment.” He should have defended the rights of his players to speak out. Instead, his words show a lot of what’s wrong with the NFL today. They are focusing on something as trivial as a quarterback sitting during the national anthem instead of on the issues that plague the league.

The NFL has an infuriating policy on domestic violence and they face legitimate safety issues regarding concussions. Goodell’s power is probably the biggest issue that the NFL has. He has far too much power and he has consistently abused it. Tom Brady is facing a four-game suspension despite sketchy at best evidence that doesn’t prove his involvement in the Deflategate scandal. Now he’s focusing on patriotism instead of the important issue that a number of his players feel is important.
