Jacob Eason and Isaiah McKenzine connect for a 66-yard touchdown in the third quarter when the Georgia Bulldogs needed it most versus Nicholls.

The Georgia Bulldogs were struggling mightily in their home opener Week 2 versus the Nicholls Colonels on Saturday. Down 14-13 halfway through the third quarter, true freshman quarterback Jacob Eason did find wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie for a 66-yard touchdown pass to give the Bulldogs a 20-14 lead.

This was Eason’s first career start at Georgia. He earned the opportunity to lead the Bulldogs on Saturday after looking respectable against the North Carolina Tar Heels the previous week. After a first drive Nick Chubb rushing touchdown, the Bulldogs offense sputtered under Eason for most of the game.

Nicholls battled feverishly against the Bulldogs, briefly taking a one-point lead over heavily favored Georgia. On embarrassing upset alert, Eason was able to help get Georgia back in front with this great pass to McKenzie.

McKenzie has scored both of Eason’s career touchdown passes. Eason’s first came via a jet sweep toss that McKenzie scored to take the lead on North Carolina last week. This one was way more legitimate for Eason.

Special teams has been an issues for Georgia in the early part of the season. Georgia is trying to figure some things out under first-year head coach Kirby Smart. This game against the Colonels was supposed to be tune-up for the Bulldogs’ SEC opener at the Missouri Tigers next Saturday.

What the college football world got was a near upset special in Athens. Georgia was able to get another quick score on the Colonels on a forced fumble by cornerback Aaron Davis, allowing outside linebacker Lorenzo Carter to get the scoop and score. Georgia would fail at the two-point conversion, but held a 12-point lead late in the fourth quarter.
