Ohio State and Tulsa had similarly successful opening week wins. While the No. 4 Buckeyes ended up winning against Bowling Green by a ridiculous 77 points, the Golden Hurricane demolished San Jose State 45-10.
The Buckeyes moved up in the polls after their blowout win, showing that even the massive exodus of junior talent to the NFL draft this past offseason didn’t hurt too much. The Buckeyes don’t rebuild, they reload.
Mike Weber filled in at the running back position as Ezekiel Elliott left to pursue an NFL career early. The redshirt freshman from Detroit rushed for 136 yards on 7.2 per touch. He didn’t reach the end zone, but he will very soon. Curtis Samuel had a solid game, rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown and catching nine passes for 177 yards and two scores.
J.T. Barrett had himself a nice opening game as well, passing for 349 yards and six touchdowns, rebounding from an opening-drive pick-six. He also rushed for 30 yards and another score on just six carries.
Tulsa, however, was led by senior third-year starter Dane Evans who passed for 198 yards and a touchdown on 13-for-23 passing. The run game was the real area of strength in game one as the Golden Hurricanes rushed for over 300 yards.
Led by junior running back D’Angelo Brewer, who had 164 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries, Tulsa had plenty of success on the ground. Can they have more success this weekend against the vaunted Buckeyes?
