The Seattle Seahawks will do a team-wide protest during the national anthem against the Miami Dolphins. Doug Baldwin explains the significance behind it.
Even though the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers are rivals, they stand behind Colin Kaepernick’s cause. Just one week after Kaepernick received national attention for sitting during the national anthem, Seattle cornerback Jeremy Lane did the same in Week 4 of the preseason.
While Kaepernick was joined by Eric Reid, the Seahawks will do a team-wide demonstration during the anthem, and they could be joined by the Miami Dolphins. Their plan has been laid out by Doug Baldwin, who cited Martin Luther King:
As Baldwin states, “We are a team comprised of individuals with diverse backgrounds. And as a team, we have chosen to stand and interlock arms in unity. We honor those who have fought for the freedom we cherish, and we stand to ensure the riches of freedom and the security of justice for all people. Progress can and will be made, only if we stand together.”
While Kaepernick originally sat during the anthem, he took a knee in the next game as a compromise. Ever since then, plenty of athletes have joined him including Megan Rapinoe and Brandon Marshall. But by doing this, the Seahawks eliminate the controversy of not standing during the anthem, while continuing the conversation that Kaepernick has started.

Seattle’s game comes on the same day that the NFL will honor the 15th anniversary of 9/11. If people have criticized Kaepernick’s decision for sending the wrong message, the Seahawks wouldn’t have heard the end of it. This is a great compromise on the Seahawks’ part and one that sends a powerful message. The Dolphins should be encouraged to join them in their demonstration.
When the national anthem will be played at CenturyLink Field, you won’t find a dry eye in the crowd.
