Browns at Eagles: Highlights, score and recap
By Matt Couden
A look at the Browns and Eagles game highlights, score, and recap for their 2016 NFL Week 1 matchup in Philadelphia.
The Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles met in a Week 1 showdown Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. But while the game provided plenty of intrigue heading in, there were questions as to how both teams would look with their offseason personnel changes, particularly at quarterback.
The Browns looked terrible on offense early on, with struggles that included a fake punt attempt that went completely wrong in the first quarter.
The Eagles fared a little better. Early on, it was tight end Zach Ertz that reeled in an impressive one-handed grab. Meanwhile, rookie quarterback Carson Wentz threw him the pass for the first down in Cleveland territory on the teamâs first drive.
Later, Wentz helped make his impact early in the first quarter with a sweet touchdown pass to receiver Jordan Matthews.
It was the ninth play of the first drive for the Eagles and resulted in the score, sending the fans into a frenzy at Lincoln Financial Field. That gave Philadelphia the early 7-0 lead.
Philadelphia hit a field goal in the second to help extend the lead to 10-0. However, after some early struggles with their offense, Cleveland finally decided to show up in the second quarter. A 44-yard strike from Robert Griffin III to Terrelle Pryor gave Browns fans hope for the season ahead.
After that highlight catch, running back Isaiah Crowell took the ball into the end zone for a two-yard score. That made it a 10-7 game and competitive early on. Griffin would stage yet another impressive drive to follow that, but it was shortlived. Still, the former Redskins star had a sweet pump-fake pass and rushing play.
Eagles linebacker Jordan Hicks would help his team prevent RG3âs drive, tipping RG3âs pass to an eventual interception.
Philadelphia grabbed another field goal just before the end of the first half, making it a 13-7 lead for the home team.
In the third quarter, Cleveland had yet another mishap when a ridiculously high snap went over Griffinâs head and into the endzone for a safety, giving two more points to Philly.
Later in the third, the rookie was back to work for the Eagles, as Wentz found another of his receivers, Nelson Agholor, for this 35-yard pass and the touchdown to make it 22-10.
Ryan Mathews would add a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth to further solidify the Eaglesâ lead.
Philadelphia finished the day with 403 total yards on offense, compared to just 288 for the Browns. The Eagles also had 23 first downs and held the ball for 39 minutes and 20 seconds, nearly twice the time Cleveland had possession.

Wentz finished with 278 yards and two touchdowns on 22-for-37 completed passes. Meanwhile, RGIII ended up with 190 yards on 12-for-26 passing, including an interception.
When all was said and done, the Philadelphia Eagles earned a 29-10 win and a 1-0 start to their season. Carson Wentz was impressive in his debut for the team, but fans will be wondering how he holds up against better defenses in the future.
