The Philadelphia Eagles’ Carson Wentz era is off to a solid start, with the rookie quarterback finding Jordan Matthews for his first NFL TD.

Many were shocked when the Philadelphia Eagles traded Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings for two high-round draft picks, thereby making rookie quarterback Carson Wentz the starter under center moving forward. Not everyone was happy with the trade, but throwing Wentz into the fire early on seems to have paid off. In the first quarter, he connected with Jordan Matthews for his first career NFL TD.

The 18-yard touchdown was a piece of beauty for the rookie quarterback, who accurately led Matthews towards the end zone to allow the receiver to create separation from his defender. The score put the Eagles ahead early in their season opener. Philly fans gave Wentz a standing ovation before the game, and it looks like the honeymoon will continue for at least another quarter.

Philadelphia’s coaching staff have made it clear that this is Wentz’s offense to lead. He may only be a rookie, but Wentz has already tied the team’s opening drive passing touchdowns from last year — as good a sign as this new-look Eagles offense could’ve hoped to see.

This is truly a new era for the Eagles, why with the team now led with a first-year head coach and rookie quarterback. There are bound to be growing pains and things to learn from, but the future sure seems bright for the Eagles faithful.

It will certainly be a play Wentz never forgets. As for Philly fans, while it’s too early to crown him a franchise great in waiting, Wentz definitely doesn’t look like someone who’s daunted by the jump from North Dakota State to the game’s highest echelon.
