Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson turned a two-yard loss into a 45-yard gain with a beastly run against the New England Patriots Sunday night.

This David Johnson kid is not messing around.

A former third round pick from the 2015 NFL Draft, Johnson has been proving his worth to the Arizona Cardinals during their season-opening game against the New England Patriots.

With the Cards trailing 20-14 at home early in the fourth quarter of their Sunday night season debut, Arizona handed their young running back the ball on a first and 10. The Patriots’ defensive line won the battle and quickly got to the young back, but he managed to turn a loss into a massive 45-yard gain.

The result of the drive was a beautiful touchdown catch for Larry Fitzgerald to put the Cardinals up 21-20. To that point in the game, Johnson had racked up 88 yards and one touchdown on 15 carries. He had also caught three balls for 39 yards.

In his rookie season, Johnson rushed for 581 yards and eight touchdowns, racking up 457 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns as well. He also had 598 return yards and one return touchdown.

Arizona made it to the NFC Championship game last year, where they were thoroughly beaten by the Carolina Panthers. In what might be Larry Fitzgerald’s last season, the stakes are high for this Cardinals team to get their franchise favorite a long-awaited Super Bowl ring.

If Johnson can continue to produce at a high level like this — and crank out beastly runs against a Patriots defense that was mostly holding Arizona’s high-powered offense in check to that point — the Cardinals should be on pace for another successful season.
