Colin Kaepernick kneels before national anthem (Photo)
San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick and safety Eric Reid took a kneee during the national anthem before their game.
With the San Francisco 49ers taking on the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football, all eyes were on quarterback Colin Kaepernick during the national anthem. All cameras were literally on him as well. As the traditional rendition of the anthem went on before a rivalry was renewed between two teams, Kaepernick along with safety Eric Reid took a knee to protest the treatment against those of color in this country. Other members of the 49ers also raised their fists in support.
While this has been a story since the preseason, just about everyone with access to a camera decided to get right up close and personal to the two 49ers with this being the regular season opener. ESPN’s camera never left them and when it zoomed out, they were still front and center.
Some members of the Rams also took part in the protest and raised their fists in unison. The scene on the field in Santa Clara resembled much of what occurred on the first Sunday of the season. More and more players are joining in on the display and whether it’s a raised fist or taking a knee, they are making sure their point gets across.
With Monday Night Football being the perfect setting to get their message across, Kaepernick was able to get the attention that he was hoping to get. It will be interesting to see how this movement progresses heading into next week.
