Play(s) of the Week: Chippewas get lucky in Stillwater

What exactly went down on Saturday afternoon in Stillwater, Oklahoma? How could the officiating crew blow that intentional grounding call so awfully? The MAC referees must have colluded to rob the Oklahoma State Cowboys of a Week 2 victory over the Central Michigan Chippewas.

Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph tossed the football out of bounds as time expired on fourth down to presumably seal the deal on the Chippewas. Somehow the officials believed that it was the right idea to give Central Michigan one untimed play with a chance to upset Oklahoma State at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Instead of walking out of Boone Pickens with a close scare in a 27-24 victory over the Chippewas, Central Michigan quarterback Cooper Rush chucked a Hail Mary to beat Oklahoma State at their place, 30-27.

This was a defeat the Big 12 could not afford to suffer should the conference want to be in the discussion for the third annual College Football Playoff. Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and TCU have already lost. Perhaps Baylor or Texas are the conference’s only shot at making the Playoff. Otherwise, Group of 5 and Big 12 hopeful Houston will take this Power 5 conference’s Playoff spot.
