Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll is optimistic his star quarterback, Russell Wilson, will play in Week 2 against the rival Los Angeles Rams.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Seattle Seahawks head coach “Pete Carroll said he is optimistic that Russell Wilson will play in Week 2 against [the Los Angeles] Rams.”

Wilson suffered an ankle injury in the Seahawks’ 12-10 home victory over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon. Dolphins defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh looked like he intentionally stepped on the Seahawks signal caller’s ankle. Wilson battled through pain, but wasn’t an effective passer in the win over Miami.

Speaking with 710 ESPN Seattle on Monday, Carroll added, “[Wilson’] got a bit of swelling, and he’ll make it through … We have to take into account that it is going to be hard. It’s going to be hard for him at practice … So we’ll have to do a few things here.”

Seattle needs to take every precaution with Wilson’s bum ankle in the week leading up to Sunday’s date with the Los Angeles Rams. If this game was at Century Link Field, maybe Carroll would consider starting Trevone Boykin over Wilson.

Week 2 between NFC West rivals will be at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. This has to be taken into account for Seattle’s decision to play Wilson. The Seahawks need their star quarterback to make a deep NFC Playoffs push. Seattle’s defense is good enough to contain a putrid Rams passing game, but the Seahawks looked mediocre at best on offense Sunday against Miami.

Keeping Wilson out of practice this week is best for the Seahawks. He’s talented enough to shine on Sunday without taking part in Seahawks practice. With Wilson under center on a well-rested ankle, Seattle can beat Los Angeles in its Week 2 home opener.
