Sunderland have been battling relegation seemingly forever, and they look like they’re going to be at it again this season. The Black Cats are currently 19th in the table, albeit with a game in hand on the teams above them. So far this season, they haven’t won a game, haven’t scored more than a single goal in a game and have generally looked the uninspiring unit that has ridden a wave of sub-mediocrity to 14-17th place finishes for the past four seasons. David Moyes has a track record that suggests he can improve this team to a mid-table level, but even he is telling fans to prepare for a relegation battle. Still, with Jermain Defoe in the side, they have a legitimate goalscoring threat. Against a very good Everton team, they’ll need him to be at his best.

Everton have looked very good at the start of this season. New manager Ronald Koeman has stamped his authority on the team already. As well as the attacking flair you’d expect from a side boasting Romelu Lukaku, Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas, Everton have displayed a new defensive stability. They’ve conceded two goals in their three games so far, and one of those was a against a talented Tottenham attack. New midfield signing Idrissa Gueye has looked excellent in front of the defense.
