Florida State defensive back Derwin James may not be out for the season after suffering a meniscus injury

The Florida State Seminoles enjoyed an easy win last Saturday against Charleston Southern, but not all the news was good for the No. 2 team in the country. During the win, star sophomore defensive back Derwin James went down with a knee injury. We’d come to find out that the injury he suffered was a meniscus tear, so you knew that he would be out a substantial amount of time — possibly even for the rest of the season.

Well, the somewhat good news here for Florida State is that it looks as if they will have their star defender back before the season comes to a close. Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher announced on Tuesday that James will miss approximately 5-7 weeks after undergoing surgery to fix the meniscus tear.

Things could have been a lot worse, but it’s still tough that Florida State will have to be without one of the best defensive players in the country, especially with some pretty tough matchups.

To start things right off, they will be without James for the showdown this weekend against Lamar Jackson and the Louisville Cardinals. We saw last weekend just how dynamic Jackson and this Louisville offense can be when they tore apart Syracuse, so not having James on the field is definitely an issue.

Then, with the 5-7 week timeframe that Fisher gave, everyone will be wondering if he’ll be ready to go for the game taking place on October 29 against the Clemson Tigers. Depending on how things play out, there’s a definitive possibility that game could be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup.

Now, though, all Florida State and Fisher can do is hope the youngster has a speedy and healthy recovery.
