The No. 13 Iowa Hawkeyes welcomed FCS-opponent North Dakota State to Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, but they would suffer a huge upset to the Bison.
At this point, I am not sure why FBS teams schedule North Dakota State. Widely regarded as the Alabama of the FCS world, the Bison pulled off an incredible upset on Saturday. Normally when a Big Ten team schedules an FCS opponent, it is an easy win, but that was not the case in Week 3 of the college football season.
Playing on the road against the No. 13 Iowa Hawkeyes, the Bison figured to put up a good fight, but eventually be taken out by Iowa. That was not the case, as they got out to an early lead, and hung on for an incredible victory. When Cam Pedersen’s 37-yard field goal sailed through the uprights with no time left on the clock, North Dakota State showed why they are perennial national champion in the FCS.

After jetting out to a 7-0 lead, the Bison started to look like they would eventually be defeated by Iowa. The Hawkeyes ran off 14 straight points to end the first half with a 14-7 lead. After the two teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter, it was all Bison in the final frame. North Dakota State scored nine unanswered points, clinching the victory with the last-second boot.
Head coach Chris Kileman came back home to face Iowa, and pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the first three weeks of the college football season. The Bison will now open up their conference schedule, as they look for their sixth-straight national championship. They are the obvious class of the FCS division, and it may be time to move on up.
Maybe it is time to bring them up the FBS level, as I believe there are at least 65 teams they could throttle at this point. The bottom line is, big schools should not be scheduling them.
