Rice University president issued an apology for the Rice Owls marching band mocking the Baylor Bears of the sexual assault scandal at halftime on Friday.

Though the No. 21 Baylor Bears beat them 38-10 on their own turf on Friday night, the Rice Owls still managed to troll Baylor at halftime when Rice’s MOB Band (Marching Owl Band) poked fun at Baylor’s ongoing sexual assault scandal.

The MOB Band has a history of making fun of its opponents during its halftime show. However, the MOB Band might have taken things too far in their ribbing of Baylor on Friday night.

Rice formed the Roman numeral IX to represent Title IX and later a star to symbolize former Baylor University president Ken Starr.

On Saturday afternoon, Rice University issued an apology to the Baylor community for the MOB Band’s jabbing of Baylor on Saturday night.

In the University’s statement tweeted out by Rice beat writer Adam Coleman of the Houston Chronicle, Rice would acknowledge that “the band’s halftime are entirely the members’ projects with no prior by the university administration.”

Let’s just say all future MOB Band halftime shows are going to have to be vetted by Rice University. That’s an admittance of negligence by Rice. While Baylor largely deserves ridicule for how the football program and the University handled the campus-wide sexual assault scandal, Rice University at least acknowledges that the marching band’s action might have been done in poor taste.

Their apology seems a bit insincere, but could your really blame Rice for trolling Baylor this hard? However, it isn’t a good look for Rice as a gracious host for future home dates against Power 5 schools. Big schools like Baylor are going to now pass on a trip to Houston to play Rice.
