2.Skip Holtz
Lou’s son worked under his father at Notre Dame in the early 1990’s, then got his first head coaching job in 1994 at Connecticut. After a solid run there, 34-23 (.596 winning percentage), Holtz went back to work for his father as an assistant at South Carolina from 1999-2003.
Holtz moved on to become head coach at East Carolina for five seasons (2005-2009), with a 38-27 record and four bowl appearances (one win) over that span.
Holtz then moved on to become head coach at South Florida in 2010, but after and 8-5 record and a bowl in his first season things went downhill. A 5-7 mark in 2011 gave way to a 3-9 clip in 2012, and Holtz was fired after that season.
Louisiana Tech gave Holtz his next opportunity in 2013, and after a 4-8 record in his first season the Bulldogs won nine games in 2014 and 2015 with a bowl win to end each campaign.
Holtz’s experience and acumen clearly rests on offense, and he has a solid record as a head coach (111-90, 1-2 so far this season). His surname may not mean anything to today’s recruits, but it would be interesting to see what Holtz could do with better talent at a bigger school. LSU, obviously, can provide just such an opportunity.
