25 college football programs with the most tradition
15. Tennessee Volunteers
At this point, we’re starting to get to the portion of the list where it’s very hard to distinguish between programs. The Vols have long been one of the best football programs in the country, and rank in the top 10 in the NCAA wins list. They are also second in the SEC when it comes to win-loss record.
UT plays in Neyland Stadium, one of the largest in the country. In 2004, they managed to squeeze in over 109,000 for a game against Florida. Besides playing winning football, Tennessee’s program has spawned a handful of time-honored traditions. The Vols’ version of light orange is distinct to the school alone and has even been made into a paint color by Home Depot. The checkerboard end zone pattern is iconic, so’s their bluetick coonhound mascot, Smokey, and then there’s Rocky Top.
