The No. 12 Georgia Bulldogs will try to keep their undefeated start to the 2016 season intact when they visit the No. 23 Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday afternoon at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Georgia is in contention for the SEC East title and more after starting Kirby Smart’s first season as head coach at 3-0, but it hasn’t always been pretty. The Bulldogs beat lowly FCS Nicholls by only two points and needed a last-minute touchdown to take down Missouri 28-27 last Saturday.
After weeks of splitting time between two quarterbacks, it appears Georgia has finally settled on freshman phenom Jacob Eason as the full-time starter. Eason has been up and down to start his career, completing 55 percent of his passes for 643 yards, five touchdowns and two interceptions so far. Georgia will need star running back Nick Chubb to get going after he totaled only 63 yards against Missouri, along with better play from the offensive line.
It’s been a disappointing 1-2 start for Ole Miss against a daunting schedule. The Rebels had a lead of 20-plus points against both Florida State and Alabama, only to lose both games with second-half collapses.
Quarterback Chad Kelly was excellent against the Crimson Tide, completing 26-of-40 passes for 421 yards and three touchdowns. A group of tall, physical wide receivers figures to challenge the Georgia secondary, led by Evan Engram after his 138-yard performance on Saturday. On the other side of the ball, the Land Shark defense will look to rattle Eason with its athleticism in the front seven.
The Bulldogs will need to play their best game of the season to come away with a win in Vaught-Hemingway, while a 1-3 start for Ole Miss could really send the season into a tailspin. Saturday’s game begins at noon Eastern on ESPN, with full streaming details below.
