Miami Marlins cancel Sunday’s game after death of Jose Fernandez

The Miami Marlins have cancelled Sunday’s game after the sudden and tragic dead of star pitcher Jose Fernandez.
The sports world is waking up to tragic news on Sunday, as the death of Miami Marlins star pitcher Jose Fernandez has left just about everyone speechless. It’s an NFL Sunday, and one of the final days of the MLB season, but we are being painfully reminded that sports is just a game and life is so much more precious.
It’s a rare occurrence, but the Marlins will not be playing Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves following confirmation of the death of Fernandez. It’s a footnote, really, to a story that has once again showed us just how unfair life is.
Fernandez was perhaps one of the brightest young stars in baseball, having defected from Cuba in 2009 to come to America and play baseball. And play it he did, rising through the ranks of the Marlins organization to become one of the team’s starting pitchers.
It was then that he truly began to take strides as a superstar. With Giancarlo Stanton hitting the ball to the moon, Fernandez was the counterweight to that, pitching lights-out baseball in just about every start he was in.

Tommy John surgery a few years ago sidetracked his rise in the MLB, but it was only temporary. He returned better than ever from his injury and continued to show promise that he was carrying the future of the sport with the likes of Bryce Harper, Kris Bryant and so many other young stars of his generation.
But senselessly and unfairly, his life is over. Not just his career, but all of the life that he had to live ahead of him is gone, and there is no way to truly be able to communicate just how utterly sickening that feeling is.
Jose Fernandez was 24-years old.
