Twitter Roundup: 2016 Presidential Debate between Clinton and Trump
Here’s a quick collection of the best tweets from the first 2016 Presidential Debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.
Monday night, the United States of America observed the most-watched and most bat-s**t insane presidential debate in the history of presidential debates with a combination of horror, sadness and glee.
With Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton squaring off in their first 2016 presidential debate, Twitter was, as the kids would say, “lit.”
With a flurry of hot take opinions, completely biased judgements, viral GIFs and hilarious memes flying through people’s newsfeeds, there were plenty of gems to be found online Monday night.
The coverage raged throughout the debate. Some of the topics were serious, such as a tweet from NYPD spokesman J. Peter Donald when Trump suggested the return of the “stop and frisk.”
There was also an enjoyable bit when Clinton brought up the time Trump said global warming was something made up by the Chinese…which he denied…which turned out to be true via his own Twitter account from 2014.
The tweets were naturally deleted from his account once they were brought to the light, but as is always the case on the Internet, nothing ever truly dies.
Even Hillary Clinton’s account managed to get in on the act, though Trump’s team deleted the tweets soon after.
When Trump started to blame Clinton for the rise of ISIS, math became difficult for everyone but the most knowledgeable of Twitter users, such as Craig Rozniecki:
And of course, there was Trump’s greatest logical fallacy of the night, when he expected the gratitude of black Americans because he demanded to see President Barack Obama’s birth certificate. Insert pondering emoji here.
Not all of the tweets were so serious, of course, and it didn’t take long for celebrities and comedians everywhere to get in on the act.
Hillary’s entrance in her all-red getup drew a strong reaction straight from the get-go.
Donald Trump’s opening statement took all of 30 seconds before he started going in on illegal immigrants from Mexico and the jobs they’re costing Americans.
Even I couldn’t resist dropping a much-needed South Park reference.
Comedian Jim Gaffigan went for the low-hanging fruit of Trump’s hair, but damn it if it wasn’t hysterical:
Trump’s constant sniffling was distracting, so of course Twitter ran with it (and rightfully so, since Trump openly questioned Clinton’s ability to be commander in chief due to her constant coughing not so long ago).
It took all of 10 minutes before Trump Sniff had its own Twitter account.
Former governor Howard Dean had a different explanation for Trump’s case of the sniffles, however:
Of course, not every tweet was a direct shot at Trump. Some were only indirect, like comparing Hillary to Jim Halpert from The Office:
And then there were the tweets that simply despaired at the way the 2016 Presidential Election has come down to Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton:
Zach Braff felt similarly:
Some of the tweets were aimed at moderator Lester Holt, who was largely silent for the first portion of the debate.
Even when he did finally speak up, Saturday Night Live comedian Leslie Jones let loose with some football references for poor Lester:
It’s okay, Lester Holt. Maybe SportsNation host Tony Reali has a solution for you for the next time around:
Most of the celebrity support seemed to be in Clinton’s favor. Scandal mastermind Shonda Rhimes made sure to show her support with a perfect Beyonce reference:
Meanwhile, model Chrissy Teigen had herself an active night on Twitter as well, voicing her support for Clinton and outright disdain for pretty much everything Trump had to say:
When Clinton called Trump out for capitalizing on the crash of the housing market, Trump’s rebuttal of “That’s called business” quickly went viral.
The best burn of the night may have come from Jerry Springer, who sorted out the entire debate in less than 140 characters:
Even better, Trump’s declarations about making up ground with minority voters in this country was quickly put to shame by Chance the Rapper, who called him out for his “law and order” comments.
DONALD, IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE SUPPORT OF CHANCE THE RAPPER, YOU PROBABLY DON’T HAVE THE SUPPORT OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS, OR ANYONE WITH GOOD TASTE IN MUSIC FOR THAT MATTER.
In a largely successful first debate for Clinton, her shimmy that would’ve made Stephen Curry proud wound up being the lasting image of the night.
Overall the debate was a win for Clinton, with Twitter and the post-debate polls ruling largely in her favor. While neither candidate made a campaign-derailing mistake, there’s no question that Trump was caught on the wrong end of social media’s running jokes this time around.

No matter which side you’re on, however, at least we can all agree on one crucial, unifying sentiment: LaGuardia sucks.
Enjoy the wait until the second presidential debate, when we get to do this all over again.
