Jim Mora is one of the most successful head coaches in New Orleans Saints history, and he was feisty as ever following the team’s third straight loss.

Sean Payton led the Saints to a Super Bowl win after the 2009 season, but there’s an argument to be made for Jim Mora as the most successful head coach in team history. He had a 93-74 regular season record over 10-plus seasons (1986-1996), including a division title and four playoff appearances.

The New Orleans Saints dropped to 0-3 on the season with a 45-32 loss to the Atlanta Falcons Monday night. History suggests they will not make the playoffs based on that start, and it’s surely an uphill climb to any sort of relevancy in the NFC playoff picture, so the 2016 season could be considered effectively “over” for the team.

Mora, now 81 years old and out of coaching since after the 2001 season, appeared on the postgame show for WDSU (NBC-New Orleans) Monday night. When the issue of the Saints’ 0-3 start and their chances for the rest of the season was brought up by lead anchor Fletcher Mackel, Mora offered a rant on par with his coaching days.

Mora was a highly quotable head coach, and surely a media favorite, with post game comments that have now lived forever in the YouTube era. His use of the phrase “diddly-poo” is one of my favorites from his time as Saints’ head coach, and of course there’s his epic and infamous “Playoffs?” rant after a loss when he was head coach of the Indianapolis Colts in 2001.

It’s good to know Mora is able to work as an analyst when it suits him, and good health appears to be in his corner. May we all be so feisty at 81 years old.
