Former Bruins defenseman Dennis Seidenberg is expected to sign with the New York Islanders.

After being bought out by the Boston Bruins, defenseman Dennis Seidenberg’s NHL future was in question as his health was a legitimate concern. However, after proving himself to be healthy at the World Cup of Hockey, Seidenberg is back in the NHL.

According to Darren Dreger, the New York Islanders will sign Seidenberg once he returns from the World Cup.

The deal is for one year and is worth $1 million. Seidenberg should help the Islanders by giving them a quality depth defenseman. Should he stay healthy, Seidenberg should fill a third pairing or extra defenseman role while providing the Islanders with a nice veteran presence.

Seidenberg got bought out due to back and groin injuries affecting his play negatively. However, he has done well at the World Cup and has proven he is, at least for the time being, healthy.

Seidenberg had one goal and 12 points in 61 games in 2015-16. During his seven-year tenure with the Bruins, Seidenberg had 23 goals and 117 points in 401 regular season games. In the playoffs with the Bruins, Seidenberg had 15 points in 50 playoff games.

He has also played for the Florida Panthers, Arizona Coyotes, Philadelphia Flyers, and Carolina Hurricanes.

In his NHL career, Seidenberg has 224 points in 758 games. Originally drafted by the Flyers in the sixth round of the 2001 NHL Draft, Seidenberg provides the Islanders with a solid left-handed option. He provides depth in case Nick Leddy, Thomas Hickey, or Calvin de Haan suffer an injury. The Islanders are a bit lacking in NHL ready defenseman, so signing Seidenberg gives them a cheap alternative to calling someone up. With the Seidenberg signing, the Islanders are now roughly $783,525 under the salary cap ceiling for the 2016-17 season.
