Rex Ryan is 9-10 since becoming head coach of the Buffalo Bills, but damn it if he’s not going to have a good time every once in a while.

There’s a reason Rex Ryan is the number one NFL coach you’d most like to have a beer with, and he just keeps proving it over and over again. Whether he’s joining his brother in a Great American Eat-Off or doing a Bill Belichick impression, Rex is hands-down the most entertaining coach in the league.

He may have topped all of his previous stunts with a wonderful troll job of New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman’s weekly conference call on Wednesday.

Edelman seemed completely unaware that he was not speaking to a reporter from the Buffalo News named “Walt Patalski,” and it was obvious to the rest of the room surrounding Ryan. It was clear that the Bills head coach fully enjoyed his trick, as was the dark-haired reporter in the background who was cheesing from ear-to-ear. Edelman stuck to the Patriots’ “do your job” mantra, though, which should win him some points with the hoodie.

We still don’t know for sure who will start for the Patriots at quarterback this week, but thankfully Rex wasn’t afraid to do a little digging. Still, it’s hard to imagine his schtick isn’t wearing a little thin in Buffalo. Ryan is only 35-48 since leading the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in 2009 and 2010, and has lost to the Patriots 11 times out of 15, and nine of the past 10. It’s been enjoyable watching him troll the Patriots in the media, but it hasn’t worked out for him much on the field.

This weekend’s game against New England may be the best chance Ryan has at knocking off the Patriots, and he may need to do it to save his job. Rex has always talked a big game when it comes to Belichick, Brady, and the Pats, but has always been swatted aside like a pesky little brother.
