Rostov got off to a tough start in the Champions League, shipping five goals against a dominant Bayern Munich team. They are not the first side to lose big against the German champions, and they won’t be the last, but in a group that also contains Atletico Madrid, where third place and a spot in the Europa League may be the most Rostov can hope for, it was a troubling start. The Russian side will need to do better against PSV, against whom they will presumably be vying for third. They can take heart from the fact PSV have not won away from home in Europe for six matches, and that they have had recent success against Dutch sides, beating Ajax in the playoff round to make it to the group stage.

PSV looked much better in their first game, losing a close contest against last season’s beaten finalists, Atletico Madrid. But for some questionable refereeing, PSV could have won the match. They were certainly unlucky not to get at least a point. The loss, however, may put an end to their hopes of making it to the knockout stage for the second consecutive year (such is the dominance of Atletico and Bayern), but they should be confident of a third place finish and a potentially deep run in the Europa League.
