Much to the delight of the Korean announcers, Orioles outfielder Hyun Soo Kim hit a pinch-hit, game-winning home run against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Baltimore Orioles had a busy offseason, but it seems like their best move — other than trading for Mark Trumbo — might have been the signing of Hyun Soo Kim. While Kim struggled in spring training, he has emerged as one of the team’s most clutch hitters. Kim’s legacy got stronger on Wednesday after hitting a pinch hit game winning home run against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Kim’s pinch-hit, go-ahead home run is his sixth hit in nine pinch-hit appearances. He is the fourth active player to accomplish that feat. It was also Kim’s sixth home of the season, as well as his fourth go-ahead hit this season for the Orioles.

Kim has done most of his damage against right-handed pitchers, with 89 hits in 307 at bats. However, Kim has zero hits off southpaws in 22 at bats.

The Orioles are chasing a wild card spot, currently leading the Detroit Tigers by one game and trailing the Blue Jays by the same margin. For Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna, it’s his fifth blown save of the year and his third loss. The Blue Jays bullpen is a concern for them, especially with the injury to Joaquin Benoit.

Kim might not get serious Rookie of the Year consideration, but the Orioles are very happy to have him. The Club planned to send him down to the minors following spring training. However, he refused his assignment. It turns out keeping him in the majors has been a wonderful thing for the Orioles.
