College Football Results Against The Spread Week 4

The college football season has been quite a ride, and we are only one month into it! My picks have suffered as a result, but I’m not going to just quit because of a bad week or two. It takes a lot more than that to get me off of your computer screen. Besides, Week 3 was pretty good for me. It’s something to build on.

More from College Football Odds

I didn’t do so well with some of my picks. Who knew Wisconsin had a quarterback? At any rate, there will always be some surprises. I’m just aiming to keep plugging along with above .500 weeks and get myself back onto the positive side of things.

The winners against the spread will be inĀ BOLD, followed by my result. Here are my picks, just in case you want to follow along. They gave you two monitors at work for a reason, right?

Thursday-Friday
Early Saturday
Saturday Afternoon
Saturday Night

Clemson(-9.5)Ā at Georgia Tech:Ā MISS! No weirdness here. Unless you count Georgia Tech not showing up at home.

Wyoming(-2.5) atĀ Eastern Michigan:Ā MISS!Ā  The Eagles are 3-1 for the first time since 1995. They also won back-to-back games for the first time in six years. Perhaps more importantly, they showed everyone how to properly carry out a peaceful protest. Well done!

TCU(-20.5)Ā at SMU:Ā MISS!Ā So much for the rivalry theme….

USC atĀ Utah(-2.5): HIT!Ā Sometimes that first one is the hardest one to get. Especially when you have to wait until the last pick to get it.

Kent State atĀ (1)Alabama(-43.5): HIT!Ā The moral of the story is: don’t ever turn down Nick Saban for a job.

Georgia atĀ Mississippi(-7.5): HIT!Ā One pretending team was exposed. There were more, but maybe not the ones you or I thought.

Nevada atĀ Purdue(-5.5):Ā MISS!Ā I should have known. Only the MAC owns the Big Ten(14).

San Jose State atĀ Iowa State(-7.5): HIT!Ā A feel-good game for the boys in Ames. The college football Gods knew that they needed one.

Charlotte atĀ Temple(-27.5): HIT!Ā This game highlighted Temple’s weaknesses more than showcasing their talents. It’s hard to do that in a 28 point victory, by the way.

Iowa(-14.5) atĀ Rutgers:Ā MISS!Ā  Iowa didn’t evenĀ scoreĀ 14. What happened to that offense? They still have two very talented running backs!

Florida State(-5.5)Ā at South Florida:Ā HIT!Ā I do enjoy when a good team gets blown out. It means that their line will be way off the next week.

Colorado StateĀ at Minnesota(-16.5):Ā MISS!Ā The Gophers are winning, but they aren’t covering. That information could come in handy.

WisconsinĀ at Michigan State(-3.5):Ā MISS!Ā Look out! Wisconsin has a quarterback! Oh, and a really good defense.

East Carolina atĀ Virginia Tech(-12.5):Ā MISS!Ā Look out! VT is back!

Central Michigan(-2.5) atĀ Virginia:Ā MISS!Ā In other news, CMU has still played a tougher schedule than Baylor.

SyracuseĀ at Connecticut(-2.5):Ā MISS!Ā The Orange want to thank you for attending the coming out party of WR Amba Etta-Tawo.

Miami(OH)Ā at Cincinnati(-17.5):Ā MISS!Ā Note to SMU: this is what it looks like to show up in a rivalry game. You don’t necessarily have to win, but you want to make sure they know you’re there.

Appalachian State(-5.5)Ā at Akron:Ā MISS!Ā I knew better.

Boise State(-13.5) at Oregon State:Ā HIT!Ā Boise looked better in this game than they have so far. Do I think they deserve to be ranked after this? Not a chance.

BYUĀ at West Virginia(-6.5):Ā MISS!Ā Taysom Hill looked explosive again. Maybe it’s more him trusting his body than actual loss of physical ability.

DukeĀ at Notre Dame(-20.5):Ā MISS!Ā I haven’t seen the Irish burned deep that much in a game since the Ty Willingham era. Duke torched them deep, and they really aren’t that explosive of an offense!

Mississippi State(-22.5) atĀ Massachusetts:Ā MISS!Ā This wasn’t quite the team that lost to South Alabama, but it was close. Mississippi State’s D needs some help after giving up 35 to UMass.

Florida atĀ Tennessee(-5.5):Ā MISS!Ā This is the first time that Tennessee has actually finished a game since Fulmer left. Was this a turning point for the Vols? I tend to think it was.

PittsburghĀ at North Carolina(-6.5):Ā MISS!Ā Much like Florida, Pitt was in control of this game, then let it slip away.

UTSA atĀ Old Dominion(-4.5):Ā MISS!Ā This was a rough afternoon….

Penn State atĀ Michigan(-17.5): HIT!Ā I know the question that is on all of our minds: what will happen when the Wolverines actually have to leave Michigan?

Wake ForestĀ at Indiana(-6.5):Ā MISS!Ā I guess the two words were Wake and Forest…..

VanderbiltĀ at Western Kentucky(-7.5):Ā HIT!Ā I’m sure glad the half was there, because I had every intention of taking the Hilltoppers.

Tulsa(-14.5) atĀ Fresno State:Ā MISS!Ā I was oh-so-close to flipping on this one because of the half as well. I should have.

ColoradoĀ at Oregon(-10.5):Ā MISS!Ā The Ralphies didn’t even need Liufau to win this one. Colorado is on the way back. It’s been a slow decade for them.

LSU(-3.5) atĀ Auburn:Ā MISS!Ā Oh LSU, you damn fools had this won!

Ball State(-3.5)Ā at Florida Atlantic:Ā HIT!Ā I really needed this one to go my way. It was a horrible afternoon for me.

North TexasĀ at Rice(-7.5):Ā MISS!Ā Ridiculous….

Houston(-34.5)Ā at Texas State:Ā MISS!Ā  Houston is relying on style points already because their schedule is soft outside of two tough games. That said, the Big 12(10) wont get a team into the playoff, so the door is wide open for Houston of Louisville.

New Mexico State atĀ Troy(-19.5):Ā MISS!Ā I learned by inference that Troy is better than Kentucky…..

Georgia Southern atĀ Western Michigan(-7.5): HIT!Ā Okay, so can the Broncos join the Big Ten(14) already?

Central Florida(-6.5)Ā at Florida International:Ā MISS!Ā Ugh….how many times will I let the Panthers burn me? No more of that nonsense! On the other side, this was a dominant win for UCF. Don’t be surprised if they make a bowl.

Louisiana TechĀ at Middle Tennessee State(-4.5):Ā MISS!Ā This half didn’t go my way. Not much has this week.

Louisiana-LafayetteĀ at Tulane(-4.5):Ā MISS!Ā Tulane won, but didn’t cover, which is about par for the week…..

Army(-14.5) atĀ Buffalo:Ā MISS!Ā Where in the world did that come from? Buffalo did lose to Nevada just last week, right? I’m not in some kind of alternate reality?

Nebraska(-7.5)Ā at Northwestern:Ā HIT!Ā Nebraska fumbled through the end zone once, and into the end zone another time, losing 14 potential points. They did their part to try and blow this.

Oklahoma State atĀ Baylor(-8.5): HIT!Ā Only 69 combined points? I thought Baylor might reach that on their own!

South Carolina atĀ Kentucky(-2.5):Ā MISS!Ā Stephen Johnson may have saved Mark Stoops’s job…..for now…..

Stanford(-2.5)Ā at UCLA:Ā HIT!Ā UCLA did play their best game of the season. They definitely made Stanford work for it. They were in control of this game until the last minute.

Louisville(-28.5)Ā at Marshall:Ā HIT!Ā The Cardinals have a better schedule than Houston, but they need style points too. Hey, they may even get a call from the Big 12(10) along with Houston!

Bowling Green atĀ Memphis(-16.5): HIT!Ā I should have put more on this! Memphis scored a school record 77 points. To put that in perspective, Memphis only scored 68 points in the basketball National Championship game in 2008. Memphis only scored that many points in basketball in half of their 34 games last season!

Southern Mississippi(-11.5)Ā at UTEP:Ā MISS!Ā I knew better…..

IdahoĀ at UNLV(-14.5):Ā MISS!Ā Apparently UNLV is the worst FBS team.

Arkansas atĀ Texas A&M(-5.5): HIT!Ā Trevor Knight threw some pretty passes in this game. Better than any he ever threw at Oklahoma, and honestly, better than anything Baker Mayfield has thrown this year.

California atĀ Arizona State(-3.5): HIT!Ā This was a very entertaining game. When was the last time you watched a game that featured 45 points in the fourth quarter alone?!?!

Air Force(-4.5)Ā at Utah State:Ā HIT!Ā At least I finished strong…..

Washington(-13.5) atĀ Arizona:Ā MISS! ……or not.

Thanks to the horrible afternoon session, I finished the week at 19-33, putting together my worst week of the year, and it is in my bottom five weeks of all time by percentage. That puts my season total at a dismal 82-110. There are a little over 500 more games to pick, but I need to pick those at about a 58% clip to reach my goal. That’s a tall order.

My points system didn’t fare any better. The season totals are in parentheses:

1.Ā 3-4 (15-17) -2
2.Ā 9-9 (30-31) -2
3.Ā 4-11 (23-34) -33
4.Ā 1-5 (10-16) -24
5.Ā 2-3 (4-12) -40

The pathetic -43 on the week brings me down to -101 on the season. I have blown almost my entire bank that I carried over from last year. I may take a more conservative approach this week. Something has to change, because conventional wisdom is doing me no good this year. At least so far.
