Tennessee defeated Georgia on a last-second Hail Mary, and the radio call is as unbelievable as you’re probably imagining.
When things happen in College Football, they happen. Case in point was Saturday afternoon when Florida State fell to North Carolina in what amounted to a news dump upset. Moments after UNC kicked a game-winning field goal, everyone’s attention shifted slightly west to Tennessee, where an even more miraculous thing had just happened.
Just as the ‘Sad Tennessee Fan’ memes were making their rounds on Twitter, the football gods decided to throw a curveball at us. Down 30-28 to Georgia with just 0:10 left in the game, Tennessee threw up a prayer of a Hail Mary to try and keep their season alive.
Against all reason, the prayer was answered. Josh Dobb’s last-second Hail Mary was caught and the Vols somehow walked away with a win against the Bulldogs.
Needless to say, when these things happen in College Football it usually makes for good radio theater. Think back to the incredible Iron Bowl call or last year when Georgia Tech beat Florida State on a blocked field goal. College radio announcers are some of the most animated people in sports and moments like this is what they live for.
Here’s the national radio call of the game-winner:
Let’s be real though. This is the radio call that Georgia fans really heard:
You could say the only thing missing is Gus Johnson, or the cliched J.R.-WWE dub that is inevitably going to happen. But these moments are what make College Football so special and the radio calls are the soundtrack to craziness that you only get this time of year on Saturdays.
