Alec Baldwin did a brilliant job of poking fun at Donald Trump’s debate performance in the Saturday Night Live Season 42 premiere.

When it comes to Donald Trump, the jokes write themselves. That was the case during the first Presidential Debate, and with Saturday Night Live’s Season 42 premiering that week, they couldn’t go without making fun of it.

If you watched the debate, you’d be forgiven for thinking SNL’s premiere was last Monday. Donald Trump’s behavior resembled that of a petulant child who spent most of his time on defense while interrupting Hillary Clinton. Nearly everyone agreed that Clinton won the debate, especially since she was fact-checking Trump throughout the course of it.

There were plenty of instances of Trump interrupting Clinton, but one of them near the end was pure gold. Clinton recalled how Trump supported the Iraq War, to which he continually responded “wrong.” Of course, everyone knew he was lying, and a quick Google search will only confirm that.

All SNL needed to do was copy the debate verbatim to make fun of it. They didn’t need to write any more jokes. That’s exactly what they did when they lampooned the Iraq War section of the debate, and the guy who played Trump? None other than SNL vet Alec Baldwin:

Everything about Baldwin’s performance – from his appearance, his voice, and his mannerisms – perfectly mirror Trump during the debate. You could almost mistake it for the real thing. Funnily enough, SNL have had the real Donald on the show before. But after this skit, they’re probably no longer in his good graces.

SNL wasn’t the only show to make fun of the debate. South Park did it earlier in the week, and so did practically every other late night show. But Saturday Night Live‘s skit was the most true to life of them all. Skits like these are why we’re glad to have this show back in our lives.
