How did the coaches on our college football hot seat watch fare in Week 5?

After Les Miles was fired by the LSU Tigers after Week 4, the season of firings is underway in college football. This week, new names were added to our weekly hot seat watch with Miles biting the dust and it’s time to review how each head coach did. It was a fairly good week for four out of the five coaches.

Four out of the five lost last week, so reversing the trend this week was good for job security. In fact, some might have even temporarily removed their name from this list. That means other new names will be added next week. Let’s examine how each coach did.

Gus Malzahn

Malzahn’s Auburn Tigers came away with a big win against LSU last week. Against Louisiana-Monroe this week, the Tigers rolled all over them in the win. They did what they had to do and Malzahn will easily live to see another week.

Darrell Hazell

Darrell Hazell can start cleaning out his office. In fact, it would be shocking if the Purdue Boilermakers don’t fire him after the loss on Saturday. The team got blown out by Maryland and his record in the Big Ten dropped to 2-23. His expressions made it seem he knew he was about to be on his way out of town as well.

Steve Addazio

Boston College already has three wins on the season, albeit it against so-so competition. Head coach Steve Addazio should be absolutely thrilled. If he can squeak out three wins somehow in conference play and get to a bowl game, his job will be safe.

Jim Mora

He wasn’t happy with officiating on Saturday night, but Jim Mora’s UCLA Bruins took care of the Arizona Wildcats. With the win, the Bruins firmly planted themselves back into the Pac-12 South race and should feel good about their performance. He isn’t completely out of the clear yet.

Clay Helton

If the USC Trojans lost to the Arizona State Sun Devils at home on Saturday night, then Clay Helton might have been fired immediately after the game. They responded with a huge blowout of Arizona State and grabbed some much needed confidence. He needs plenty of more help to keep his  job, but this was a start.
