Avengers #1 introduces new team, might kill it all off right away

Avengers assemble! And then die, apparently …

Comic book death isn’t what it once was. No regular fan of superhero comics would argue that point.

Still, it’s not often that a publisher tells you right up front that it might kill off an entire team of notable heroes in their first adventure together. Yet that seems to be what Marvel is hinting at in its release for the preview of the new Avengers #1 coming in November.

Writer Mark Waid and artist Mike Del Mundo are taking over to chronicle the saga of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, and while the team’s roster is in a constant state of flux, the lineup of Captain America (Sam Wilson), Thor (Jane Foster), Vision, Hercules and Spider-Man (Peter Parker) could be especially short-lived.

Here’s what Marvel says:

"Now, Captain America, Thor, The Vision, The Wasp, Hercules and the Amazing Spider-Man leap into the time stream to confront Kang the Conqueror! But when the dust settles, not a one of these valiant heroes will make it to the final page alive. Welcome to…KANG WAR ONE!"

“Not a one,” eh? That sure sounds like the whole team is being sent to their graves (or whatever Vision would end up in) right off the bat.

Of course where Kang is involved, there’s generally a way back from even the most complete defeat. Call it the blessing and curse of being a villain who controls time.

That’s an awesome crystal dragon, or whatever it might be.

Avengers #1 arrives in comic shops and on digital on November 2, with a cover by Alex Ross and variant covers by Adam Kubert, Daniel Acuna and others. You might want to make sure you pick it up just in case this group never gets to assemble again.
