The Chicago Cubs enter the playoffs after finishing the regular season with the best record in baseball. When is the last time they won a World Series?

One thing’s for sure, if you’re reading this article, you’ve never seen a Chicago Cubs World Series title. The last time the team won was in 1908 and the Cubs became the first in history to win back-to-back titles. The club appeared in three straight championships after winning in 1907 and losing in 1906 to the Chicago White Sox. I’m certain you can do the math yourself, but if not, it’s been 108 years since the Chicago Cubs claimed a World Series title.

Here’s a list of events that have occurred since 1908:

  • The Titanic was built, sank and rediscovered
  • Radio and TV were invented
  • The United States has added four states

History hasn’t been kind to the Cubs since 1908, as they have appeared in five World Series but won zero. Their last appearance was 71 years ago, in 1945, when they lost to the Detroit Tigers.

Many have blamed the “Curse of the Billy Goat” for the Cubs woes, and at some point a part of you begins to think they may be right. The club has been close to making it back to the big show recently, but the curse has reigned supreme. Think back to the 2003 National League Championship Series, when a fan, Steve Bartman, reached out of the stands and interfered with Moises Alou.

Though it’s easy to see why this season may finally be different for the Cubs:

There’s little argument to be made that the Cubs aren’t currently the best team in baseball. With MVP candidates like Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo leading the way, the team has a great chance to stop the streak at 108 years. As any Cubs fan knows, you don’t want to speak too soon. It’s a “see it to believe it” type situation, and fans who have loyally stuck around for their entire lives are ready to see it.
