MLB Playoffs: Sportsnet broadcaster talks throughout ‘O Canada’ (Video)
Before the MLB Playoffs matchup between the Blue Jays and Rangers, a Sportsnet broadcaster forgot to turn off his mic during ‘O Canada’.
National anthems have been taking quite the hit recently. Not only have NFL players knelt during America’s national anthem to protest systemic racism and police brutality, but now even “O Canada” is getting hit.
Before Game 1 of the MLB Playoffs series between the Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays, a Sportsnet broadcaster talked throughout Canada’s national anthem.
It was clearly an inadvertent act. Sportsnet is based out of Canada, so it’s highly unlikely a broadcaster would intentionally ruin its national anthem. Still, it’s awfully embarrassing because it ruined a beautiful performance of the song. Sportsnet didn’t talk during America’s national anthem, as both anthems were performed because the Blue Jays are from Canada while the Rangers are from the United States.

The series doesn’t need any more drama. It has enough thanks to the bad blood between the Rangers and Blue Jays. The bad blood goes back to last year’s playoffs, when the two teams played in the first round. It was a close series, which ended with the teams on bad terms. The Rangers notably took offense to Jose Bautista’s bat flip after his game-winning home run in Game 5.
Their bad blood got even worse after Bautista slid in hard to second base to try to break up a double play against the Rangers on May 15. Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor didn’t take kindly to it and confronted him. It ended with Odor punching Bautista in the face and a benches clearing brawl.
Edwin Encarnacion’s home run against the Baltimore Orioles in the American League Wild Card game guaranteed a rematch of last year’s series.
