With the Florida/LSU game being cancelled due to Hurricane Matthew, could this end up costing the Tennessee Volunteers the 2016 SEC East Championship?
The SEC decided in the best interest of safety to cancel the Florida Gators’ Week 6 home game against the LSU Tigers due to Hurricane Matthew. While the game could have been moved to Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, the SEC and both member institutions might look to reschedule the rivalry game.
However, with Florida and LSU not having a common open date the rest of the season, the likelihood of this game being rescheduled is slim. An interesting part in all of this is that it might end up costing the Tennessee Volunteers the 2016 SEC East Championship.
USA Today Sports’ Don Wolken points out that if Tennessee goes 6-2 and Florida finishes 6-1, wouldn’t that mean the Gators win the SEC East?
So if Florida goes 6-1 in the SEC and Tennessee goes 6-2…Florida wins the division?

Since Florida is the team most likely to win the SEC East not named Tennessee, maybe the Gators will have to reschedule for an early December game with LSU. Tennessee beat Florida head-to-head in Week 4, but face two absolutely brutal opponents in the next two weeks: @Texas A&M and home versus Alabama.
Tennessee very likely will finish 6-2 in the SEC this season. Should Florida top both the Georgia Bulldogs and the Arkansas Razorbacks later this season, the Gators look pretty good at being 6-1.
Winning the SEC East on a technicality would have to drive Rocky Top Nation through the roof. With the SEC canceling the Gators’ game with LSU, the conference should be responsible for a rescheduled date if this postponed game would help decide the SEC East race.

This is only relevant if Florida does finish 6-1 and Tennessee drops both to Texas A&M and Alabama to finish at 6-2. Tennessee has been good, albeit lucky this season. This would be a very cruel way for the Volunteers’ College Football Playoff hopes to end on a technicality.
