The Army Black Knights will try to match their highest win total since 2010 when they visit the Duke Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon at Wallace Wade Stadium.
Army got off to a terrific start under third-year head coach Jeff Monken with a mark of 3-0 that included a stunning upset of Temple to open the season. The Black Knights blew a great chance to move to 4-0 last week at Buffalo with a late collapse in a 23-20 overtime loss.
Still, this looks to be the best Black Knights squad in some time. The Army defense is surrendering just 14 points per game, while the Black Knights’ triple option offense ranks first in the nation with a mark of 374.2 rushing yards per contest. Former linebacker Andy Davidson leads the Black Knights with 80 carries for 414 yards and six touchdowns.
While Duke owns one the marquee upsets of the season over Notre Dave, it has struggled overall in 2016. The Blue Devils sit at 2-3 and have already dropped games to two of the bottom teams in the AAC in Virginia and Wake Forest.
Despite the issues, the Blue Devils still have the potential to score a lot of points with David Cutcliffe running the show. Quarterback Daniel Jones, who is replacing the injured Thomas Sirk, has nearly 1,550 total yards and nine touchdowns, although he needs to do a better job of taking care of the ball with eight interceptions so far. Jela Duncan has been solid on the ground with 56 carries for 314 yards.
While the Blue Devils will be favored at home, Army should not be underestimated even with the tough loss a week ago. Duke has a tough schedule over the rest of the season, starting with a trip to Louisville next week.
