A Notre Dame fumble against NC State essentially led to the field becoming a slip-and-slide as everyone tried to recover the loose ball
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and North Carolina State Wolfpack are playing in a hurricane. While Hurricane Matthew may not be directly hitting Carter-Finaly Stadium, it’s close enough to where they probably shouldn’t be playing football in that weather. However, the game kicked off and wore on through some ugly, ugly football. Even still, there were some at least amusing moments created by playing on the weather-ravaged field in Raleigh, NC.

With NC State nursing a 3-0 lead (how they actually hit the field goal is also a mystery), Notre Dame was trying to get a drive started while being backed up. Instead, they botched the snap to star quarterback DeShone Kizer. Kizer couldn’t hang onto the ball and it went past him. With the fumble up for the taking, calamity ensued.
Both players from Notre Dame and NC State went charging after the fumble. Instead of diving for a loose football, though, the chase for the recovery much more closely resembled a trip down a slip-and-slide.

Who knew that you could enjoy a nostalgic summer activity while also playing college football?
A play like this truly does highlight how absurd it is that this game is being played at all. These young men are literally diving into puddles to try and grab the football. Nevermind the fact that the football is on the ground mostly because no one can hang onto it in these conditions. College football and both of these programs have definitely had finer moments.
Yet, the game wears on in Raleigh. Let’s just hope that friendly slip-and-slide fun and horrible football is the only consequence of this game being played. If someone were to get injured because of the puddles and slick field, that’d be an absolute travesty.
