These are three things we learned from Oklahoma’s victory over Texas in the Red River Rivalry.
If there was ever a rivalry game that lived up to the hype, it was on Saturday, when the Oklahoma Sooners defeated the Texas Longhorns. It was a classic battle between the two programs with plenty of big plays between the two. The star players took over and it created highlight plays that will be remembered.
In the end, it was the Sooners that were able to outlast the Longhorns. Samaje Perine had a huge day on the ground and Baker Mayfield made big plays with his arm and legs. Although, he almost blew the game with a fumble near the end. Nonetheless, Oklahoma has come away victorious and it’s time to break down what we learned.
3. Dede Westbrook is the real deal
Dede Westbrook is one of the best deep ball threats in the nation. He had over two yards receiving and three touchdowns on the day. When the Sooners needed to go down the field, he was able to make the big play. He’s emerging as one of the best in the nation and will continue to get better.
2. Oklahoma needs to be more careful in late-game situations
The Oklahoma Sooners survived Texas, but could have given it away. After Samaje Perine came out of the game for one play, Joe Mixon fumbled the option. Luckily, Oklahoma recovered. With time running out and the Sooners needing to just get down a possession later, Baker Mayfield fumbled. Oklahoma recovered and they got real lucky again. They can’t afford to keep making those mistakes.
1. Charlie Strong is in trouble
After he was being hailed for a great job the first couple of weeks, Charlie Strong is in trouble. The Texas coach has lost three games in a row and the host seat is turning up. It was already pretty warm with his team being inconsistent, but now a loss to their rivals could doom him. He likely won’t be fired now, but he has to turn the rest of the year into wins or he is done.
