Charlie Strong’s Texas Longhorns have fallen to 2-3 on the year. Will Texas fire Strong after his loss to the arch rival Oklahoma Sooners?

Things are not looking swell for the Texas Longhorns in 2016. They have dropped to 2-3 on the year after upsetting the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in overtime in Week 1. Texas’ most recent loss came to the rival Oklahoma Sooners in the Red River Showdown, 45-40. Will Texas fire head coach Charlie Strong after this tough loss to the Sooners?

According to reports at Horns Digest, Strong will have to go 8-4 during the 2016 regular season to keep his job in Austin. He has never done better than 6-7 in his time as the head coach of the Longhorns.

8-4 is still possible for the Longhorns, but they can now finish no better than 9-3 during the 2016 regular season. Texas still has a heavy slate of games in the Big 12 and it’s not looking good for the Longhorns to get that crucial eighth win.

The problem with the Strong era in Austin has been that his defense has been lousy. Strong is a defensive-minded coach, having been Urban Meyer’s defensive coordinator at Florida, and the former head coach of the Louisville Cardinals where his defenses were stout.

To keep up with the Air Raid offenses commonplace in the Big 12, Strong has decided to go with that type of aerial attack on offense. While Texas is scoring, the Longhorns aren’t stopping anybody. That extra eight or so minutes of defense a game is making Texas especially vulnerable defensively.
