Texas vs Oklahoma: Highlights, score and recap
The Oklahoma Sooners outlasted the Texas Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry.
The Red River Rivalry lived up to the hype yet again. It was an old fashioned shootout between the two teams. Although, the first half wasn’t indicative of the game that would be in the third quarter, it turned into a classic battle.
After the Longhorns held the early advantage of a field goal and touchdown to just one touchdown from Oklahoma, the Sooners would put up a highlight reel score of their own. Dede Westbrook would go 71 yards on a pass from Baker Mayfield.
In fact, it was Westbrook that was the big target through the air. As the two teams traded touchdowns back and forth in the third quarter, Westbrook would haul in three total scores on the day and over 200 yards of offense. Remarkably, he wasn’t the only one making insane plays.
The Longhorns would take the lead in the third quarter, as Dorian Leonard caught a bobbling touchdown past the Sooners defender. Needing to put the foot down on their rivals, Mayfield and Samaje Perine would change things up a bit. Mayfield would run in for a score of his own, while Perine would slow down the pace in the fourth quarter.
The running back had over 200 yards rushing on the day and two big touchdowns. However, he lost his helmet late in the game, which forced him out a play. That caused Oklahoma to fumble the next play and resort to field goal, which put them up 11.
With a little over two minutes to go, the Longhorns had to score quick. D’Onta Foreman would bust up the middle for 22 yards for the score. Texas would miss the extra point and would be down five with an onside kick attempt looming.
Oklahoma would recover the onside kick. That would be all for Texas, as the Sooners knocked off their hated rivals and turned the heat up on Charlie Strong a little more.
