WWE No Mercy 2016 results: AJ Styles vs Dean Ambrose vs John Cena full video highlights
A look at what happened in the surprising match opener of the WWE No Mercy pay-per-view.
On Sunday night, the WWE No Mercy pay-per-view had been set to see AJ Styles vs. Dean Ambrose vs. John Cena main event the show. However, WWE surprisingly moved the match to the event’s opener. It would seem that the Intercontinental Championship match will headline.
This feud has seen Ambrose and Cena go at each other for weeks. Their tensions have risen to the point where they brawl nearly every time they come in contact. Styles has been involved, but mostly with his title defense in September. He defeated Ambrose with the roll of the tights, and a distraction from Cena.
What would happen when these three met at No Mercy?
Ambrose, Cena, and Styles went after each other off the bat and collided with each other. The action then went to ringside with Ambrose in control. However, Styles came back by taking out Cena with a forearm on the outside.
As Ambrose and Styles brawled, Cena came up and suplexed both Superstars. The Face That Runs the Place would go for an AA but missed. Ambrose got dumped to the outside and left Styles and Cena in the ring.
Styles would hit a double DDT on Ambrose and Cena for near-falls. Cena then continued his offensive assault on Styles for a near-fall.
Cena went for the Super AA but Styles countered with a backbreaker rack into a sit out powerbomb. Ambrose returned to briefly take out Styles. Cena then went for his five-knuckle shuffle routine, but got stopped by The Phenomenal One. As he went for the move a second time, Ambrose stopped it.
With Ambrose and Styles down, Cena hit a 10-knuckle shuffle and an AA on Styles and Ambrose. However, The Lunatic Fringe kicked out of the pinfall attempt. Cena then locked in the STF, but got broken up by Styles.
The former NJPW star then hit a 450 splash on Ambrose for a near-fall. Cena came back in to put an STF on Styles, but Ambrose stopped Styles from tapping out by grabbing his hand.
Ambrose and Cena would lock in submission holds on Styles, who tapped out. The referee didn’t stop the match, though, because he couldn’t declare a winner. So, the match would continue.
Styles ended up using a chair to take out Cena for the win.
A great match to open the show, which usually would have been the main event. Ambrose, Cena and Styles all delivered.
The double submission will be what gets people talking, though. Ambrose and Cena both getting Styles to tap seemed to confuse the crowd and was something unexpected. It didn’t lead to the match’s finish, which happened a few minutes later.
