Massachusetts: Angelo Bertelli – Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Massachusetts has produced a few solid college quarterbacks, including Tim Hasselbeck and Todd Collins. However, there’s a clear-cut top quarterback from the Bay State and his name is Angelo Bertelli.

Bertelli entered Notre Dame as a tailback in 1940 but was quickly noticed for his passing skills. As a sophomore, he was fully converted to quarterback after coach Frank Leahy switched to a modified T-formation offense. The switch produced immediate success and Bertelli received the nickname of “T-formation magician.”

As a senior in 1943, Bertelli had his best season and was a consensus All-American. He also won the Heisman Trophy that year and was the top overall selection in the 1944 NFL Draft. He was inducted into the College Football of the Fame in 1972.

His NFL career wasn’t as successful as his collegiate career, but there’s no question Angelo Bertelli is the greatest college passer born in Massachusetts.
