Rhode Island: Joe Reed – Mississippi State Bulldogs

Rhode Island is the smallest state in the country, so it should come as no surprise that it’s not a great producer of top college football players. Boston College’s Will Blackmon is probably the most noteworthy name. There was also a quarterback named Joe Reed that played for Mississippi State.

Reed was born in Newport, Rhode Island and played for the Mississippi State Bulldogs from 1969 to 1970. He didn’t have a spectacular career like many of the other signal-callers on this list. However, in 1970, he finished third in the SEC for pass completions and total yards. Joe also finished fourth in passing yards, rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns.

He went on to play in the NFL for eight seasons for the San Francisco 49ers and the Detroit Lions. His pro career was sub-par and he’s most famous for recording an album with the 49ers’ cheerleading squad. It was slim pickings when choosing the best college passer born in the Ocean State, but Joe Reed gets the nod.
