West Virginia: Fred Wyant – West Virginia Mountaineers

When it comes to college football players born in West Virginia, the first name that comes up is the great receiver, Randy Moss. Not only did he dominate the NCAA at Marshall University, he also went on to become arguably the greatest NFL wide receiver not named Jerry Rice. After Moss, thinking of other good players is hard, and especially so for quarterbacks, but Fred Wyant stands out as the best signal-caller born in the Mountain State.

Wyant was born in Weston, West Virginia and was a three-sport star at Weston High School. He played football in college for the West Virginia Mountaineers, where he became one of the greatest quarterbacks in school history. He ranks in the school’s top 10 for total offense, passing yardage, pass attempts and touchdown passes. With Wyant under center, the Mountaineers had a  30-4 record and went to the 1954 Sugar Bowl. He was also a three-time academic All-American.

Fred didn’t have much of a pro career, as he played only one season for the Washington Redskins and then one season in the CFL. However, due to his prolific career for the Mountaineers, he deserves to be recognized as the best college quarterback born in West Virginia.
