ESPN College Pick Em Picks Week 7

I had by far my best week of the year in ESPN College Pick Em last week. Moving the LSU-Florida game down to one point helped, but I also only missed one pick. Virginia Tech destroyed North Carolina. 88% of the pickers picked the way I did, so I wasn’t the only one that got burned by that.

My 50 point week vaulted me up to fourth place in the Fantasy CPR reader’s group. I gained ten points on the leader, who is sitting at 250 points. Even after a great week like that, I am still a ways behind.

We should have a full ten games once again for week 7. There are a few tough picks on here. Ones that involve good teams that are struggling. Those are always the toughest to pick.

Here are the ESPN College Pick Em picks for week 7. They are in order from least confident (1) to most confident (10) for those of you that play the confidence version of the game like I do.

(1) Texas Tech over West Virginia:

Here is my upset for the week. I am pretty nervous about this one because of the health of Patrick Mahomes. West Virginia is also coming off of a bye, and the team they beat heading into it was the one that Texas Tech just lost to. So why Tech? Because this is West Virginia’s first road game of the season. We are in the middle of October, and they have yet to leave the friendly confines of Milan Puskar Stadium. I like a more tested Tech team at home.

(2) Mississippi over Arkansas:

The poor little Piggies have to play Alabama and Ole Miss, possibly the two best SEC teams, in back to back weeks. Hey, at least they got them both at home! It is little consolation though. The Ole Miss defense is still one of the best, and Arkansas couldn’t move the ball against Bama. This is going to be tough sledding again in Fayetteville.

(3) Colorado over Arizona State:

My reasoning here is simple: the Ralphies hung with USC in LA. Sparky did not. This is up in the air at Folsom Field, which can be a very tough place to play. Especially when the air is getting crisp. And this is a night game. I like the Buffs at home.

(4) Ohio State over Wisconsin:

I want to say Wisconsin has a chance of turning the college football world on its ear. I just don’t see it happening. Indiana did a solid job of containing J.T. Barrett. Wisconsin will likely do the same. Indiana was able to move the ball with a really good passing attack. No one has been able to run on the Buckeyes, and that is what Wisconsin would need to do to pull the upset. Ohio State shuts down the offense, but expect another low scoring slugfest in Madison.

(5) Miami over North Carolina:

The Hurricanes have to feel like they gave that game away. The Tarheels come in with a worse feeling. They just got pounded into the turf by a physical defense. Miami’s defense isn’t as formidable, but that offense is chock full of future NFL players. The much-maligned Tarheel D is in trouble here.

(6) Alabama over Tennessee:

If Tennessee falls behind again, they are doomed. Alabama will put them away like no other team has been able to. If they turn it over seven times again, this will be a blowout. The offense will get a boost if Jalen Hurd returns as expected. That will go a long ways towards improving their ball security. The Vols still wont be able to move the ball much against the Tide defense.

(7) Stanford over Notre Dame:

Brian Kelly’s seat is getting a little toasty, and this wont help. The vaunted Stanford D was exposed by both Washington teams in the last two weeks. They need to find a way to get stops on defense and to move the ball without Christian McCaffrey on offense. Teams have devoted their entire game plan to stopping McCaffrey, and it works. It works because no one else has stepped up. I think someone does here against the beleaguered Irish.

(10) Western Michigan over Akron:

A little MACtion on ESPN College Pick Em! Nice! Actually, all it amounts to is a free pick. Western Michigan can survive without Jamauri Bogan if they have to. Akron will be lost without QB Thomas Woodson if he is unable to go. Even if Woodson plays, this is tough sledding for Akron.

(9) Clemson over North Carolina State:

The Wolfpack defense looked great in the deluge in Raleigh last week. They wont have the rain to slow down the Clemson offense, and I really doubt they can do it on their own. Clemson is staring down a return trip to the playoff and a Heisman campaign for DeShaun Watson. This could get ugly.

(10) Florida State over Wake Forest:

Wake is having their best season since the Jim Grobe era earlier this millennium, but their chances of winning in Tallahassee are practically zero. They wont be able to move the ball on the Seminoles, and they have no answer for Dalvin Cook. I still like Wake’s chances of winning eight games. This wont be one of them.
