In a league where players careers are sometimes remarkably short and making it five seasons is truly an accomplishment, what Adam Vinatieri has accomplished is absolutely amazing. True, his 21-year NFL career has a lot to do with his position since Kickers are protected from the hard-hitting action other positions have to endure. The 43-year-old went off this week and carried his team to victory in our FootSided fantasy football league. In case you haven’t been following along, at FanSided we decided on a radically different way to play fantasy football this year. Our league has just one position–fantasy football kickers, where even old guys like Vinatieri can be fantasy stars..

For a refresher on the specific rules and roster setup, check out this post from the beginning of the season which also explains who all the players in the league are. Vinatieri has been a great value pick for Adam Best who grabbed him with the 15th pick overall, but the vet is currently the leading scorer in our league.

While we have plenty more “traditional” fantasy football coverage throughout the week (which you can find in the box to the right), our fantasy football kickers league is probably the only league where every single kick and every single score matters. Almost every kicker in the NFL is owned  by someone in the league. Each week, it’s extremely easy to track since each team just has two starters. The other benefit to the league is that it takes minimal time each week to set your two-man lineup.

We decided to make the league scoring even more exciting at the beginning of the year by penalizing a team three points for a missed XP. The four-point swing when a kicker fails to connect on an extra point can make all the difference between winning and losing.

With over a quarter of the season in the books, contenders are starting to emerge although there is still plenty of fluctuation from week-to-week. In the East, Patrick Allen leads the way by a game over me and Mike Dyce. In the West, Adam Best, Matt Verderame, and Matt Blake are in a three-way tie at 3-2 atop the division. The top four teams will make the playoffs with a two-week semi-final in weeks 14-15 and a two-week final in weeks 16-17.

Let’s take a look at the scoreboard from Week 5 in our fantasy football kickers league to see which of our owners came out on the winning side.
