Conor Sheary put the Penguins up 2-1 in the second period, but he wasn’t the focus of the goal.

All eyes were on Jonathan Bernier, who looked lost on the Penguins’ tally. The Ducks goalie was trying to play the puck but lost control. After that, things weren’t looking up for Bernier.

After fumbling on the puck, he continued to search for it, but it was behind him and on its way into the net. From that point on, he didn’t try to come back and wasn’t aware of the play.

This isn’t a good sign for the Ducks, but Bernier hasn’t been all terrible for them in his debut. In fact, the Penguins have 34 shots on goal so far, and he’s stood tall for the most part. Bernier is coming off a rough season in Toronto, going 12-21-3. The 28-year-old also posted a 2.88 GAA and .908 save mark in 36 starts.

The Anaheim Ducks acquired Bernier in July after trading goaltender Frederik Andersen before the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. He proves to be a somewhat stable option in net. He is great when it comes to fast reflexes and reaction time, and knows how to get in prime position. However, his inconsistency and habit of surrendering bad goals takes away from his potential as a starting netminder.

After projected John Gibson surrendered four goals on 20 in Thursday’s 4-2 loss to the Dallas Stars, Anaheim decided to go with Bernier.

Despite a rough start for Gibson, the sophomore will likely get to stay on as the Ducks’ starting goaltender. The 23-year-old goaltender had a breakout rookie campaign, and proved sensational for the Ducks. In 63 starts, Gibson went 37-22-4, posting a 2.25 GAA and .918 save percentage.

Gibson is a great goaltender and has a lot of skill and talent; however, he needs to get in sync with the season. Especially considering Andersen is gone, Gibson needs to prove he can be their trusted starter.
