Kliff Kingsbury apologizes for Texas Tech’s loss to West Virginia
Kliff Kingsbury didn’t take Texas Tech’s loss to West Virginia well and apologized for it.
Kliff Kingsbury has had an up and down ride with coaching Texas Tech. He started his career 8-4 in 2013 but flipped that record around in 2014. The 2015 squad finished with a 7-6 record and one of the nation’s best offenses.
As for 2016, the Red Raiders were 3-2 heading into Saturday’s game against West Virginia. The offense had been electric with 38-plus points in their first five games. However, this changed vs the Mountaineers. Texas Tech lost, 48-17, which is by far their largest losing deficit of the season and lowest amount of points scored. They were down 24-7 at halftime and allowed double-digit points in three of the four quarters.
After the game, Kingsbury spoke to Chris Level of Red Raider Sports and seemed distraught over the loss. He said the following:
Maybe apologizing to all these parties is a bit much, but it’s also difficult to fault Kingsbury for being upset with his team’s performance. They had been a prolific offense all season long, but got shut down by WVU. 27 rushes for 34 yards isn’t going to do it despite the aerial attack offense they run.
Texas Tech’s schedule won’t get any easier next Saturday when they play No. 19 Oklahoma. So, we may see Kingsbury apologize to the fans, student body, and alumni, again. It’s arguably a must-win for them to get into a bowl game with Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas and others left on the schedule.

As for their opponent from Saturday, West Virginia has quietly gone undefeated through five games. They came into the contest ranked No. 20 and should rise, potentially into the top-15. Dana Holgersen’s squad could make some noise by the end of the season.
Kliff Kingsbury’s team will try to get things going as well. They won’t be ranked anytime soon, but need some momentum.
