Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterback Patrick Mahomes unleashes a 44-yard touchdown to wide receiver Jonathan Giles on a third and 29 against West Virginia.
The Texas Tech Red Raiders are known as a football program that throws for a ton of yards and plays almost no defense. Many argue that the Air Raid system makes its quarterbacks look good, but signal caller Patrick Mahomes is starting to look legit in 2016.
Down 7-0 to the undefeated West Virginia Mountaineers, Mahomes absolutely belittles the West Virginia secondary on a touchdown pass to his favorite wideout Jonathan Giles. It was a 44-yard bomb on a third and 29 for Texas Tech.
Mahomes is on pace to throw for over 6,000 yards in head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s offense. He’s not your typical Texas Tech quarterback. Mahomes doesn’t dink and dunk. He has NFL arm talent and capable legs that can move the chains.
Texas Tech is 3-2 on the year, but are a dangerous team in the Big 12. Mahomes and Giles are a major reason for that, but Texas Tech seems to be turning the corner as a program under Kingsbury.
Mahomes has a ton of highlight reel plays in his own right. He’s essentially the Big 12’s version of Louisville Cardinals quarterback Lamar Jackson. Should Mahomes continue to put up stats in Red Raiders’ victories, he might crash the Heisman Trophy party.

There is still a lot of football left to be played, but it doesn’t seem like Mahomes is a system quarterback. He’d thrive in just about any passing offense in the Power 5.
