After 60 minutes of scoreless soccer, Romelu Lukaku gave Everton a shock lead over Manchester City to continue his superb form.

Last season was one of the most difficult seasons for Everton. Everything that could go wrong did, and even though they finished 11th, they played like a relegation team. Romelu Lukaku’s 25 goals couldn’t save them, and he was the only reason they finished in mid-table.

Roberto Martinez was deservedly fired, and Ronald Koeman has done a brilliant job in his place. Of all the new Premier League managers that were hired, Koeman’s might have been the most under-the-radar appointment, but nobody has improved their team more than he has.

But even though they’re performing above expectations, nobody expected them to beat Manchester City on the road. The Sky Blues were favorites to win the Premier League before the Manchester Derby, and they’ve only solidified that claim since then. They have brushed aside most of their opponents with ease by suffocating them with possession.

That was the case again against Everton, but once they got a counter-attack, Lukaku (who else?) finished it off to give them the lead:

Lukaku actually got off to a slow start, but in Everton’s last five games, he has six goals. And when he’s on that type of form, Everton can beat just about anybody. But City got the goal back rather quickly when their new signing Nolito got the equalizer.

Even though their lead didn’t last long, a point would be a brilliant result for Everton. It would prove that their strong start is no fluke, and that they can hang with the Premier League’s elite. And after Manchester City lost for the first time to Tottenham, they were desperate to get all three points, but this would put them in a precarious situation. By the end of this week, we just might see a new team at the top.
