Browns at Titans: 3 things we learned
The Tennessee Titans held on for a 28-26 win over the stubborn Cleveland Browns. Here are three takeaways from that contest.
It got a little interesting late in the fourth quarter. But the Tennessee Titans now own a 3-3 record thanks to a 28-26 victory over the visiting Cleveland Browns.
Mike Mularkey’s club owned a 28-13 lead with less than seven minutes to play but Browns quarterback Cody Kessler found Terrelle Pryor for his second score of the day and running back Duke Johnson added a late touchdown plunge to bring Hue Jackson’s club within two points. But the Browns failed to recover the onside kick and Tennessee made it two straight wins after opening the season 1-3.
So what did we learn about two teams obviously headed in vastly different directions?
1. Titans passing game evolving
We have seen vast improvement from the Tennessee aerial attack the last two weeks. Quarterback Marcus Mariota has thrown three touchdown passes in each of his last two outings. In the back-to-back losses to the Raiders and Titans, the second-year signal-caller failed to connect for a score and was picked off three times.
But we’re starting to see both Kendall Wright and Rishard Matthews make their presence felt, the latter scoring in each of the team’s last two contests.
2. Terrelle Pryor is a great story
The one-time collegiate quarterback is really making a name for himself as a wide receiver and enjoyed a solid day against a very-respectable Tennessee defense. Pryor was targeted a game-high 13 times and caught nine passes for 75 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He currently leads the club with 33 receptions, good for 413 yards and three scores. He’s been one of the league’s most intriguing players this year and a bright spot on a winless club.

3. Tennessee pass rush continues to impress
Dick LeBeau’s defensive unit has allowed only nine touchdowns in six outings this year. And the Titans continue to put the heat on opposing quarterbacks. They now have 18 sacks in a half-dozen outings in 2016, six of those in Sunday’s two-point win over the Titans. Outside linebacker Brian Orakpo continues to show his one-time Pro Bowl form in his second season in Nashville and is among the league leaders with seven sacks this year.
